Dear James, by Jon Hassler is best read after reading Staggerford and A Gree Journey, at least the latter.
It is the story of an elderly single woman from Staggerford, a ficticious town in northern Minnesota.4/5. James (of the title) was not well fleshed out, but if he knew Agatha as the readers do and was in love with her, then I really don't need to know any more about him. I guess for fans of all things Catholic, or for those whose piety equals Agatha's, the book is worth the trudge-through/5(14).
'Dear James' helped me tremendously - it's not full of shattering revelations, but rather sound encouragement, good common sense, and wisdom. Plus it's funny. I was so impressed I wrote an email to Mr Blechman to thank him for writing the book, and to my surprise he wrote back to me, thanking ME for my message/5(6).

Hassler's seventh (North of Hope, etc.) again delivers the goods: this time, Agatha McGee (who first appeared in A Green Journey, ) travels to Italy to visit her old friend and pen-pal James, a Catholic priest.
